Deer Leather / Elk Leather

Deer Leather / Elk Leather

At VU, deer leather is used in leather products such as bags and wallets.

The deer leather we use is produced by a long-established Japanese tannery with a history dating back to the Edo period.
Focusing on the natural quality of the material and long-lasting durability,
we avoid excessive processing and preserve the inherent completeness of the leather.

Often referred to as the “cashmere of leather,”
deer leather is exceptionally soft, supple, and close to the feel of skin.
Its unique fiber structure provides lightness and strength,
while also offering resistance to water and friction, along with breathability.

It conforms naturally to the hand from the first use,
and with continued use, develops a richer softness and subtle sheen,
deepening its character over time.

At VU, we pay close attention to differences in texture and thickness depending on the type of deer,
and select materials according to the nature of each product.

Deer leather, known for its light and supple quality,
is used across a range of everyday leather items such as bags and wallets,
providing ease of use and a comfortable tactile experience.

Elk leather, also a type of deer leather,
has greater thickness and a fuller, more voluminous character.
While retaining softness,
it is suited for bags that require structure and presence.

Although both are deer leather,
they differ clearly in thickness, touch, and overall presence.

At VU, we do not emphasize these differences excessively,
but instead allow them to function naturally within design and use.

Lightness, softness, durability.
And the way it evolves with continued use.

This deer leather quietly supports the value of daily use
within VU’s bags and wallets.
